A Sport for the Mind and the Body
The Makoto Arena II is a reaction time trainer that has been described as a cross between “Whack-A-Mole” and “Simon.” It’s a triangle with durable 6-ft. steel towers rising from each corner. The smaller arena has a distance of 6’ between towers, the larger arena is 8’ between towers. Each tower is electronically wired to emit sounds and lights; the lights can occur randomly in any of 10 locations per tower, and there are four tones that correspond to the height of the target.
Using hands, feet, and/or staff, one responds to the audio prompt and attempts to hit the lighted area before the light goes off. Reaction time and accuracy (actually hitting the lighted area) are measured electronically, so one can compete with oneself or others. The speed of the prompts is easily adjusted for varying abilities.
Makoto is unique in that in addition to providing physical fitness benefits, it also improves brain function. A study by Calvin College shows that it is statistically significant at improving inter-hemispheric transference (how quickly the brain is communicating information between the two hemispheres of the brain.) This may be why the military is using it for Special Forces training, and a number of professional sports teams uses it as well. If you consider the brain to be the "computer" of the body, Makoto's effect is like increasing the operating speed of your computer.
Why does it achieve these benefits? This "game" stimulates the brain in a variety of ways. During the course of a game, the player is first responding to direction of sound. Then the brain is processing the pitch - the higher the tone, the higher the target. At the faster levels, a player must start configuring their body for the next hit as soon as they hear the sound. Cross-midline movements engage both hemispheres of the brain and occur naturally during the course of play. Then there's visual discrimination. Finally, there's the hit - this isn't VR!
